I appreciate finding this site, the insights of the writer and the extremely well informed views of respondents to this article. I am currently unable to find work, just got notified today that landlord won’t be renewing lease as of July 19th, 2025 and I and facing all these serious issues because when I was just 18 I was convicted in a sting operation of talking explicitly to a minor (14). I am 37 now. The entire situation was entrapment. No crime was actually committed, it was in essence pre-crime. A darling dream of the very technocrats in bed with law enforcement. This is not the first time I have experienced this, twice I have been taken in by loving friends and twice my presence in their apartments got them and their families including myself evicted. And since moving to a different state I have twice been told to leave (me and my girlfriend and her now 16 year old daughter) upon short notice to find another place to live. Each time landlords saying it’s something else but I KNOW what the real reason is. If anyone knows any one or and agency that can help me and my family I live in North Carolina. Not sure if anyone will see this but it’s worth as shot and at the very least I spoke my heart and mind. Email: jgwl1987@gmail.com

It is a means of banishment, not seen since basically the scarlet letter, if that story is even true. It has been used to make it harder to find a partner, a job and housing to start. It is the good ole boys in blue being able to twist and bully a segment of the population whichever way they please. It is the public subliminally being told to hate on people who they do not even know personally, but who they know of, thanks to the website which everyone looks at some time or another. It's just disgusting lawmaking at it's worst; a failure beyond epic proportions.

In reply to <a href="https://ncrsol.org/2024/01/4807/#comment-7248">Tim in WI</a>.

My thing, along with what you are saying, is that the registry was created as a result of Megan's Law. There were significant sex offenders prior to Megan's Law. What made Megan's so significant was that she was raped AND murdered. To prove how the registry is political tool to target a group of people,

If Megan's situation was based on the commission of both crimes, why are sex offenders required to register, but not murderers? If the registry is based upon victims 16 yr and under, why are there registrants with 17 year old victims? And so we're clear, so the man that raped a 5 year old the day before Megan's Law (hypothetical) was enacted is not a threat and doesn't need to register, how is this 18 year old with their 15 year girlfriend that they went to high school together a threat that should now be publicly shamed. Without factoring the recidivism evidence (or lack thereof) that proves how useless the registry is, let's be real. If someone is so much of a danger, or threat, that public information needs to be made about their life (charge, vehicle, job, residence, etc). If they are that much of a danger to society, why are they not in prison for life? If they aren't able to be trusted in society, why are they allowed in society? The answer is exactly as you suggest. The registry is a BS campaign tool that fuels people's fear in order to win votes.

The use of the sex offender registry has extremely limited use and is more a tool to inflict punishment and humiliation on individuals and families. The overall additional restrictions imposed are unconstitutional and violates most of our civil rights and freedoms. If registration is such a good idea we're is the registry for persons whom were convicted of robbery, burglary, fraud, impaired driving, and so on.
People whom have been convicted of a sex offense have become the scape goat of our society.

Great article!
In simplest terms the registry is a gov database. It is a state property that certain convicted citizens must upkeep. The original intent of this particular database was to identify & divide the people, the subset from the whole. Both dominating parties were substantially in favor of dividing the people via ubiquitous database. They were all to happy to do so. Elections were won by those actions. Victim rights advocates applauded, and billions spent investing in the database driven infrastructure. We could trust it, they said, it was a passive regime.
Furthermore, there was no proof in intended affirmative restraint or disability discussed in the law itself. The labor demanded was mainly administrative so that doesn't count. The Rehnquist Court did precisely what Dwight D. Eisenhower told them not to do...surrender to technocrats. The minority in Smith V03 called out the Catholics who voted in block and called it what it was "unquestionably punitive in effect." As far as this observer can see the database driven media is causing the civil temperature of the people to rise. No doubt the internet has brought lots of crime with it. None of this crimes are the responsibility of the wires and switches. It's the human use of the databases that matter. Who made the choice to behind to enslave humans to their maintenance? Who would recommend rendering humans subservient to such properties for life? Who if not the purveyors of a database collective?
