Finding employment is one of the most difficult task a person with a felony has to face. Having a sexual offense on your record can make this even more difficult,

Finding employment is one of the most difficult task a person with a felony has to face. Having a sexual offense on your record can make this even more difficult, especially if you live in a state that requires you to not work within a certain distance of places like schools and parks. Below are listed tips and resources that may help you in finding a job, even if you have a felony for a sexual offense. If you are on probation, there may be additional requirements that could hinder successfully securing employment. Check first with your probation requirements before applying and accepting an employment offer.

There are not guarantees any of this information will help you find a job, this is just listing things helpful or government and/or non-profit organizations have recommended.

Ask Friends and Family

Friends and family are first important steps in searching for a job. Most likely they know of your past and will be willing to work with you if you are on parole or probation. If a family or friend owns a business, ask if you can work for them. Maybe a friend or family member’s place of employment is hiring and by asking them, they could be a positive reference for you to their employer. You may find that friends and family are willing to hire you for odd jobs, providing you with short-term employment until you find a full-time job.

Temp Agencies

Many temp agencies will work with individuals who have felonies on their records. If you call several temp agencies and they say they do not work with those that have felonies or there is a certain length of time that must pass since your conviction date, do not give up. Some of the larger temp agencies have policies in regard to hiring felons, but there are many medium and smaller temp agencies that are willing to work with you to help you find temporary employment, which could become full-time based on your job performance. Many temp agencies post job listings on Indeed.

Federal Bonding Program

the U.S. Department of Labor established The Federal Bonding Program to provide Fidelity Bonds that guarantee honesty for “at-risk”, hard-to-place job seekers. The bonds cover the first six months of employment. There is no cost to the job applicant or the employer. In most states the bonds are made available through the state agency responsible for workforce matters. A list of where one can obtain a Federal Bond for each state is available on their website.

Non-Profit Organizations

There are a few organizations that are helping individuals whom have a felony find jobs. One of those organizations is Better People, which is located in Portland, Oregon. Another organization is Chrysalis, located in Los Angeles. A third organization is The National H.I.R.E Network, which help people across the US. A fourth organization is Hard 2 Hire.

State Employment Agents

Many states offer job search assistance. These places help with writing a resume, and job searches, which may even offer help conducting mock interviews. NC Works Online is a good tool to begin localized job searches. For more information about North Carolina-specific former offender job searches, please click on this resource page for vital information.

Start Your Own Business

If you have a skill like carpentry, cooking, or computers, you may want to look into starting your own business. With the advancement in technology, starting a home base business is much easier. There may be some restrictions to what type of business you may start, check the North Carolina website before you start a business.

Other Resources

“From Jail to a Job” the hardcore ex-offender job search manual, is a step-by-step guide that can teach any ex-offender how to get a job quickly. This book has helped thousands of ex-offenders and felons get jobs.

Riley Guide

Riley Guide – Ex-offender – Not only does the above site provide relevant information for ex-offenders seeking employment, but it also provides a LIST of employers who will hire ex-offenders. Some of these employers actively seek to hire ex-offenders to give them a second chance!

Sex Offender Jobs

Sex Offender Jobs – A blog dedicated to providing information for people who can find gainful employment. They want to see all people that have to register to find a good job where they can support themselves and their family.

Michael Castleman — Perhaps you’re familiar with pornography critics’ allegations: As much as 30 percent of Internet content is porn, and tens of millions of men (and some women) waste

Michael Castleman — Perhaps you’re familiar with pornography critics’ allegations: As much as 30 percent of Internet content is porn, and tens of millions of men (and some women) waste much of their lives in endless, mind-numbing, relationship-killing, out-of-control, binge-watching, which leaves their lives in tatters and their partners and families in despair.

Actually, that’s nonsense. Only 4 percent of today’s Internet is porn, and while a tiny fraction of men watches for more than two hours at a sitting, the vast majority of men—and the women who account for 25 percent of the porn audience—treat it like a coffee break, a brief time-out from daily hassles.

How Much of the Internet Is Porn?

The Broadway musical, Avenue Q, is a raunchy send-up of Sesame Street. One puppet character strikes it rich in online porn and leads the cast in the show’s most rollicking number, “The Internet Is For Porn.”

At the dawn of the Internet, that was true, but things have changed. Computational neuroscientists Ogi Ogas, Ph.D., and Sai Gaddam, Ph.D., coauthors of A Billion Wicked Thoughts: What the Internet Tells Us About Sex and Relationships, explain that the proportion of the Internet devoted to porn depends on the era. During the early Internet (1996-1999), the vast majority of users were young adult men, a group particularly interested in video sex. In 1999, 40 percent of Web searchers involved porn. But since then, as the Web has infiltrated every corner of almost all lives, the proportion of Internet content devoted to porn has fallen substantially. Ogas and Gaddam analyzed the 1 million most visited websites and found that 42,337 were sex-related at just 4.2 percent.

Time Spent Worldwide on Internet Porn?

No one knows for certain. But a reasonable estimate can be deduced from three sources: statistics published by a top porn site, my own tabulation of viewing data for the top 100 porn sites, and studies by University of Montreal researcher Simon Louis Lajeunesse.

But before we go there, one myth must be debunked, the notion that only “bad” men (and women) watch porn. Actually, virtually all men with Internet connections do. For one study, Lajeunesse hoped to compare the sexualattitudes of men who either watched porn or had never seen it. He couldn’t find a single man who hadn’t seen it. To be male is to watch.

Now, about time spent on porn. The world’s second most popular porn site, PornHub, publishes annual audience statistics. For 2019, here’s what Google Analytics showed about time spent there:

Visit duration Share of PornHub visitors

0 to 5 minutes 52 percent

5 to 10 minutes 18 percent

10 to 20 minutes 16 percent

20 to 30 minutes 6 percent

30 to 60 minutes 5 percent

1 hour to 2 hours 1 percent

More than two hours 0.2 percent

More than half of viewers spent less than five minutes per visit, and 86 percent—almost nine out of 10 visitors—spent less than 20 minutes. Only two viewers per 1,000 watched for more than two hours at a time.

Next, I obtained metrics for the world’s top 100 porn sites for the month of April 2020 from SimilarWeb, a company that compiles Web traffic data.

The world’s top porn site, XVideos amassed 2.92 billion views among 382 million unique visitors who averaged 12.5 minutes per visit.

The number 100 most popular porn site, DrTuber, attracted 27.83 million views from 16 million visitors who watched for an average of 3.5 minutes per visit.

Overall, for April 2020, the world’s top 100 sites garnered 14.5 billion views from 3.3 billion unique visitors who spent an average of six minutes watching video sex.

However, as mentioned above, more than 42,000 sites present porn. Are the top 100 representative of all of them? To answer that question, I turned to three friends. One is a mathematician. Another is a computer engineer. The third is a biostatistician. Their consensus estimate: The top 100 sites probably capture the great majority of total porn views. They agreed that visit duration for the top 100 sites very likely extends to all sites—around six minutes per visit.

But there’s a problem. Viewers may stay only 5 to 10 minutes per visit, but some might go to porn sites many times a day, which would increase their viewing time, perhaps substantially.

Fortunately, as part of a 2014 study, the University of Montreal researcher mentioned earlier asked a large group of men how much time they spent on porn. Single guys said they averaged two hours a week (three weekly visits of 40 minutes each), coupled men 34 minutes a week (1.7 weekly visits of 20 minutes). Men watch porn for five to 17 minutes a day.

Of course, it’s likely that some of Lajeunesse’s sample under-estimated their viewing. People often under-estimate engagement in stigmatized behaviors, for example, smoking and drinking. For argument’s sake, let’s presume that the men watched 50 percent more porn than they admitted. That would mean coupled men watch an average of 7.5 minutes a day, single men 25 minutes—still not very much.

Conclusion: The porn-bashers are mistaken. Two men in 1,000 may watch for more than two hours at a time, but for 99.8 percent of men, porn is not some black hole that sucks them into oblivion. It’s more like a coffee break, a little time-out from daily responsibilities—and no threat to civilization or to the well-being of men or their relationships, occupations, or families.

Screen Time: What’s the Difference?

According to Nielsen, the media-tracking company, in 2016, the average American watched television (broadcast, cable, and streaming) 35 hours a week—almost the equivalent of full-time employment. Some viewers call themselves TV addicts and Web sites offer tips for breaking the habit. But television viewing provokes no outrage, no accusations of rending the social fabric.

Millions of men care passionately about NFL football. During usual (non-Covid) seasons, many spend Sunday afternoons and Sunday, Monday, and Thursday nights watching games that typically last three hours. If fans view two games on Sundays and all three weeknight games, they watch 15 hours a week. Many women call themselves “football widows” and Internet sites offer support. But televised football prompts no national hand-wringing.

Meanwhile, men watch porn for 7.5 to 25 minutes a day, one to three hours a week, only a small fraction of the time most people spend glued to on-screen entertainment.

What’s the difference between watching porn and TV or football? It’s explicitly sexual and while watching, most men engage in self-sexing, which around 25 percent of women consider appalling and the sex addiction industry calls pathological.

Anti-porn women and the sex addiction industry are mistaken. Self-sexing is normal, natural, healthy, stress-relieving, and great fun. It’s the foundation of satisfying partner lovemaking. Sex therapists recommend it as part of treatment programs for premature ejaculation, arousal difficulties, trouble working up to orgasm, and recovery from childhood sexual abuse. If you have trouble enjoying sex with yourself, it’s very difficult to enjoy it with anyone else.

Yes, there’s tons of porn on the Internet—but so what? The vast majority of those who watch spend no more time viewing than the typical coffee break. The sky hasn’t fallen. Internet porn is not a social crisis, not even close.

P.S. If you are among the tiny proportion of men with problematic relationships to porn, you can find help and support. Consult a sex therapist who employs cognitive-behavioral therapy.

Wake County is now conducting drive-thru COVID-19 testing at specified locations throughout the county. This free service provides an easy and efficient way for residents to learn if they have the virus. If you are unable to secure an appointment time, you may be able to use the drive-thru service if you have your registration form with you. However, try to be on-site at 10 a.m on the testing dates available.

Those seeking a COVID-19 test will not exit his/her vehicle. All of the testing are self-administered while seated in your vehicle. A health worker will give instructions at the passenger or driver window (just roll your window down a few inches for testing). Self-administered testing typically takes less than a minute per person.

Before you arrive, fill out this registration form (also available in Spanish) and print a copy to take to your appointment.

In addition to your printed registration form, you need to bring an ID. Examples of acceptable forms of identification include your driver license, voter registration card, passport and utility bill.

If you have questions, call Wake County’s COVID-19 hotline at 919-856-7044 or email covid19.questions@wakegov.com.

Originally published July 16, 2016, at With Justice for All

By “Shelly Stow” . . . If things really come in threes, then I have a monster story yet to come my way.

The first one was when an editor wrote a “Pokemon warning” to his readers and chose to call registrants living in the area “the real monsters.” I took exception to that verbiage and, after contacting him, sent my rebuttal, which he, in decency, printed.

Now, this morning, when I opened my usual collection of daily alerts, one shouted at me, “Monsters among us site provides digital vigilance to help you keep track of sexual predators…” The thing turned out to be nothing more than an advertisement for Family Watchdog [now behind a paywall] masquerading as a site review, but my initial reaction was, again, my radar going on high alert at the word “monsters” being used to describe those on the registry.

At the end of the piece was a request for readers to share their favorite sites for him to review. I took him up on it, sending him the following. Time will tell if I get a response.

Dear Mr. O’Neill,

Thank you for the invitation to share a favorite site. The one I would like to share is www.nationalrsol.org. It is the site of National Reform Sex Offender Laws, Inc., and it is dedicated to the advocacy of laws and policies based on facts and evidence that support the successful rehabilitation and reintegration of law abiding, former sex offenders into society. This is our goal because this is what research shows will help create a safer society.

Unlike the site you most recently recommended, we do not call people “monsters.” Research indicates that pejorative language of that type is counter-productive in furthering the rehabilitation initiatives approved by our criminal justice system.

Additionally, we find the type of site touted in your article “Monsters among us site…” contradictory to empirical evidence, and we find companies such as Family Watchdog extremely unethical as they are using deceit to play on the fears of parents. An exhaustive look at the research and scholarly literature on the subject will reveal that evidence does not support the use of public notification such as public sex offender registries. These popular but wasteful schemes do not further public safety, reduce sexual re-offending, nor offer any protection to children or other potential victims. They are predicated on misconceptions and myths and are denounced by academics and scientists alike.

I will be happy to dialogue with you further on this subject. Thank you for considering the site I have recommended for your column.

Addendum: “Shelly” reports that she did not get a response from Mr. O’Neill

STEVEN YODER — In late 2006, a public defender went before a Napa County judge to argue for his client’s freedom. Rex McCurdy, a 49-year-old man, had been detained for seven years at Atascadero State Hospital under a 1995 California law authorizing “civil commitment” of people who have been convicted of sex offenses, a practice that keeps them confined long after they have completed their sentences.

In 1983, McCurdy had pleaded guilty to a rape, for which he served two years in state prison. In 1990, he was convicted of a burglary and served another six years. In 1998, McCurdy says he was brought in on a parole violation for living too close to a school, contrary to his conditions of release. Prosecutors used that violation and the two prior convictions to get McCurdy classified as a “sexually violent predator” (SVP), he says. That designation let them civilly commit him to Atascadero, much the way people with mental health issues can be locked up when they are deemed a threat to themselves or others.

Seven years after McCurdy was committed, his lawyer, Jim McEntee, was trying to persuade a judge that his client was a low risk to reoffend. If he failed, McCurdy would be confined at the hospital indefinitely. Fortunately, the lawyer had heard of evidence that might tip the scales: a study done at Atascadero itself that could help his client.

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed a bill into law on Monday, March 24 which adds new restrictions to registered sex offenders attempting to access the grounds of their own children’s

Wyoming Governor Mark Gordon signed a bill into law on Monday, March 24 which adds new restrictions to registered sex offenders attempting to access the grounds of their own children’s schools.

While registered sex offenders in Wyoming are generally prohibited from coming onto school grounds or loitering within 1,000 feet, some exceptions in Wyoming law exist if people’s own children are attending schools or if registered sex offenders are themselves students.

Under the previous law, registered sex offenders could access schools to attend their children’s extracurricular activities or conferences. Wyoming House Bill 68 modifies this law so that permission is required before registered sex offenders can access schools for this purpose.

The new law will allow such access “with the written permission of the school principal, vice‑principal or person with equivalent authority.”

Registered sex offenders will still be allowed to access school grounds to drop off or pick up their own children without permission from principals.

With the signing of the bill into law, people who are registered sex offenders are barred from entering school facilities or loitering within 1,000 feet of school grounds unless the registered sex offender:

Is a student in attendance at the school

With the written permission of the school principal, vice‑principal or person with equivalent authority, is attending an academic conference or other scheduled extracurricular school event with school officials present when the registered offender is a parent or legal guardian of a child who is participating in the conference or extracurricular event

Resides at a state licensed or certified facility for incarceration, health or convalescent care that is within one thousand (1,000) feet from the property on which a school is located

Is dropping off or picking up a child and the registered offender is the child’s parent or legal guardian

Is temporarily on school grounds during school hours for the purpose of making a mail, food or other delivery

Is exercising his right to vote in a public election

Is taking delivery of his mail through an official post office located on school grounds

Has written permission from the school principal, vice-principal, or person with equivalent authority, to be on the school grounds or upon other property that is used by a school

Stays at a homeless shelter or resides at a recovery facility that is within one thousand (1,000) feet from the property on which a school is located if such shelter or facility has been approved for sex offenders by the sheriff or police chief

Perhaps North Carolina lawmakers can learn from our fellow Americans in Wyoming how to amend our draconian state school statute. A significant number of registrants in North Carolina are parents. These parents must be engaged with his/her child at every opportunity to provide a roadmap towards parental and academic success. Wyoming gets it and puts it in the hands of school leaders. North Carolina is lagging far behind and puts it in the hands of sheriffs that have no business in managing school affairs.

A convicted sex offender infected with the deadly coronavirus has died in prison in the United Kingdom.

The 84-year-old passed away three days ago at HMP Littlehey, in the village of Perry near Huntingdon in Cambridgeshire, England.

Prison officials have told news sources that the Covid-19 is thought only to have been detected after his death.

Littlehey, a low-level prison where its inmate population does not allow work release programs due to a majority of its people are incarcerated with sex offense crimes, has over 450 inmates. Most of them are male in shared cells. There is no word if other staff is infected. However, 19 inmates have tested positive for the virus within the UK prison system.

Several transport officers with the UK prison system have contracted the Covid-19 virus. No word on their condition and the potential affects of transmission to the prison population.

This is the first fatality in the United Kingdom that has gone public.

Being this is the first fatality, and in the United Kingdom, it should be a lessons learned moment for any nation that health care and public health measures in any prison system must be significantly improved and quick to respond to isolate outbreaks from spreading. Many advocates in the United States fear that such sympathy or equal access to health care will fall on deaf ears to improve public health conditions in prisons.

America will have to wait and see the final death toll in prisons, civil commitment facilities, and those affected by the sex offender registry living at home but enduring in-person mandatory appearances and home checks during a time of national crisis. Will our attitudes change after the Covid-19 has subsided? That assessment will be left up to public opinion and how advocates deal with after actions reviews.

Avery Seeger, Eagle Post, Staff Writer (Hopkinsville, KY) — Dayton Jones and his defense counsel have filed a lawsuit on the grounds that he should not have to register as

Avery Seeger, Eagle Post, Staff Writer (Hopkinsville, KY) — Dayton Jones and his defense counsel have filed a lawsuit on the grounds that he should not have to register as a sex offender.

The lawsuit was filed March 3 against the commonwealth, Kentucky Justice and Public Safety Cabinet as well as Probation and Parole officer Megan Goss.

Attorneys Daniel J. Canon of Saeed and Little, LLP out of Indianapolis, and Darren C. Wolff, a Louisville attorney, are representing Jones.

The lawsuit alleges Jones’ constitutional rights were violated for being required to register as a sex offender after receiving a pardon and commutation letter from former Gov. Matt Bevin.

The lawsuit states, “To counsel’s knowledge, there is no Kentucky case which squarely addresses whether a convicted felon must comply with Kentucky Sex Offender Registration Act once their sentence has been pardoned or commuted.

“However, the Kentucky Supreme Court has stated that a pardon relieves a convicted felon of ‘all the consequences which the law has annexed to the commission of the public offense of which he has been pardoned and [the convicted person] attains new credit and capacity, as if he had never committed that public offense.”

Jones’ counsel states that nothing in the pardon and commutation document suggests that Jones should have to register, noting that it would have been within the power of the governor to require him to do so.

“If forced to register under SORA, Jones’ rights under Kentucky law will be violated,” the document states.

The suit further claims that if Jones is required to register as a sex offender, he will suffer “immediate and irreparable injury, loss and/or damage.”

The suit claims Jones will suffer from registering in the form of reduced employment opportunities, severe social stigma, traveling restrictions, psychological harm and the ability to live wherever he chooses.

It also argues that Jones was granted a pardon instead of a commutation.

“On December 9, 2019, Bevin issued Executive Order No. 2019-1332, which styled ‘PARDON & COMMUTATION,’ ” the lawsuit wrote.

“Though the document clearly states that it is a ‘PARDON,’ the document simply states the fact of Jones’ conviction, and concludes that the Governor ‘hereby commute[s] the sentence of Dayton Ross Jones to time served.’

“There is no further limitation or requirement placed on Jones by the plain language of the ‘Pardon & Commutation’ document. The Secretary of State’s Website lists this document as granting an ‘unconditional pardon’ to Petitioner (Jones).”

It goes on to say that since the executive order was made by Bevin, the commonwealth has treated the document as granting a pardon.

However, on Jan. 13, the Kentucky Secretary of State’s office clarified to the New Era that the 15-year sentence of Dayton Jones was commuted, not pardoned, after the heading on the executive order was unclear.

While the lawsuit focuses largely on the commonwealth’s actions against Jones, it also accuses Goss of violating Jones’ rights.

The lawsuit alleges Goss caused a letter to be delivered to Jones’ grandparents’ house, which contained a signed notice of discharge declaring that Jones is on sex offender post-incarceration supervision.

However, Jones and his counsel say Jones had not signed the notice and had not seen it prior to Feb. 26, the date the letter was received by his grandparents.

His counsel further alleged that Goss required Jones to report to her office Feb. 28 for sex offender supervision.

In the lawsuit, Jones’ counsel requests several orders be made by Franklin Circuit Court, including a speedy hearing and declaring that Jones was granted an unconditional pardon by the former governor and doesn’t have to register, among other requests.

According to New Era archives, Jones pleaded guilty Aug. 22, 2016, to first-degree sodomy, first-degree wanton endangerment and first-degree distribution of matter portraying a sexual performance by a minor.

In November 2016, he was sentenced to 15 years in prison with no possibility of probation and a lifetime requirement to register as a sex offender upon release.

Jones, Colton Cavanaugh, Tyler Perry and Samuel Miller all pleaded guilty to the Oct. 12, 2014, sexual assault of a 15-year-old who was sodomized with a sex toy during a party. The boy suffered severe internal injuries as a result of the attack. It was also captured on video and shared on social media.
